Santa on the Chicago Area Polar Express Storytime and Holiday Trains

Santa and Mrs. Claus preparing to board a Polar Express train

The “Polar Express" the popular book by the author Chris Van Allsburg and the movie based on the book has made Santa train trips all the rage in recent years. You’ll find many area town park district trips on Metra trains, public libraries, convention and visitor bureaus, Jaycees, the Chicago Transit Authority, the Illinois Railway Museum and the Fox River Trolley Museum, among others all offering Polar Express trips or holiday trains, featuring Santa Claus. These trips have proven to be very popular—be sure to book early, most of these trips sell out months in advance. Remember, trains don’t wait for anyone, plan on arriving at the station at least twenty minutes before departure time.

Why is Warner Bros. Playing Scrooge?

Some of you have probably noticed that I changed the name of this page from “Santa on the Polar Express” to “Santa on the Chicago Area Holiday Trains”. There is good reason for this change.

Many of you are probably not aware that Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Inc. attorneys have sent a letter to the park districts and others who are offering Polar Express trips advising them that they can no longer use the name Polar Express. To use the Polar Express name, they will have to pay a licensing fee to Rail Events, Inc. who are working in cooperation with Warner Bros. They have been allowed to call their trips Polar Express events for one last time this season.

This isn’t out of the kindness of Warner Bros. heart, it’s because these events have already been advertised and published in their brochures and on their web sites as “Polar Express” trips. Warner Bros. knows it’s impossible for them to change anything at this late date. Also, they know if they tried to force the issue this year there would be a huge uproar, and it would be a public relations disaster.

I understand this fee can be up to 30% of the gross revenue charged for these trips. No park district—which are non-profits can afford this kind of corporate rip off or greed! These events, which have been operating happily for many years will never be the same again. The Polar Express train rides, by far have been the most popular Santa Claus events in the Chicago area and probably in the entire country.

If the poem “ The Night Before Christmas” had been written today, instead of in1823, Santa Claus wouldn’t have become that beloved iconic figure and the whole holiday tradition as we know it today wouldn’t be celebrated. Santa would be owned by some corporate media giant and everyone would be forced to pay big bucks to use his name or image.

As one person said to me, “Next year there may not be any park districts ’Polar Expresses' with Warner Brother wanting small agencies to pay them exorbitant royalties. The cost would make it prohibitive for most of our families". It's a shame, but an event that has become a family tradition will now be gone forever.
